Odukpani Council Boss Meets with Ikot Offiong and Okoyong Communities, Calls for restraint

The Executive Chairman, Odukpani Local Government Area *Hon Amb (Mrs.) Justina Edem* has called for restraint from Okoyong and Ikot Offiong Communities.

She made this known in a meeting convened by her in respect to the Wednesday 19th May, 2021 crisis between Ikot Offiong and Okoyong which led to loss of lives, destruction of properties at Ubambat-Okoyong, Akpap-Okoyong, and UsungUrua-Okoyong.

The meeting which was held at the Local Government Council had in attendance representatives of Okoyong, Ikot Offiong, Security Personnel, Clergies, some Councillors, and Council Executive.

The Chairman reiterated the need for Communities to live in peace with one another because war, violence, taking up of ammunition does no good.

According to the Chairman “this is not a court neither are we judges, but all of you are mine, as a Chairman and a mother, these crisis gives me sleepless nights. I thank you all for coming but i am calling for restraint and the need to embrace peace as no Community develops in an atmosphere of war”. She advised that no word or statement should be attributed to any speaker because they are representatives of their various Communities while urging them to stop rumour mongering and sponsoring of the crisis.

She expressed her sadness and disappointment in the unfortunate event and wondered why people would throw caution to the wind and avoid using dialogue to settle quarrel.

“Unfortunately, this is happening at a time i have gone far with the government on the resettlement of Ikot Offiong indigenes as promised by the state government”, she said.

Both speakers presented their case which was noted and heard by everyone at the meeting. At the end of the meeting, Ikot Offiong Community pleaded with the government at all level to resettle them because they had been homeless for twenty-one years since they left their ancestral land.

Both side promised to abide with the word of the Chairman by exercising restraint, and stopping further hostilities.
